Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid

Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid Review

Out of print in the U.S.! Bob Dylan's mostly instrumental soundtrack to the surreal Western from director Sam Peckinpah. Of the few vocal tracks on the album, the stunning now-classic (and often covered) 'Knocking On Heaven's Door' made it's debut on this release. 10 tracks. Sony.

Time Out of Mind

Time Out of Mind Review

Time Out of Mind Feature

  • 1987, Sony Music Entertainment
At the beginning of Time Out of Mind, Bob Dylan finds himself in the same dead-day world as on 1964's "One Too Many Mornings." By now, though, he can't be bothered to romanticize the street and the distant dogs' barking; he can only moan about how sick he is of love, of himself. Saying it seems to give him the strength to go on, and go on he does, over 11 songs that are among his most plainspoken and musically eloquent. The reconstituted bottle-blues that sparked the early '90s acoustic masterpieces Good As I Been to You and World Gone Wrong carries over to Daniel Lanois's carefully dirty production and a groove that tops anything Dylan's done in a studio since, at least, Blood on the Tracks. No matter how lousy he feels, this is the work of a mighty, mighty man. --Rickey Wright 1. Love Sick 2. Dirt Road Blues 3. Standing In The Doorway 4. Million Miles 5. Trying To Get To Heaven 6. 'Til I Fell In Love With You 7. Not Dark Yet 8. Cold Irons Bound 9. Make You Feel My Love 10. Can't Wait 11. Highlands

Playlist: The Very Best of Bob Dylan 60's Review

Welcome to the Playlist series. Painstakingly compiled by the artists and the music nuts at Legacy Recordings, these collections truly represent an artists' complete body of work. We've fished through hundreds-thousands-of tracks to cherry pick the perfect playlists. Not just the hits (anyone can find those). The life changing cuts. The out-of-print tracks. The fan favorites everyone loves. The songs that make the artist who they are.

You’ll no doubt enjoy the sound of the beautifully remastered songs on this CD (as opposed to MP3's that contain less information, which translate into compromised sound). But we think the thing you'll appreciate most about this Playlist is that even though you didn't make it, you might wish you did.

Is it Rolling Bob?: A Reggae Tribute to Bob Dylan

Is it Rolling Bob?: A Reggae Tribute to Bob Dylan Review

Bob Dylan's songs have been covered by everyone from the Byrds to Muzak. But performers from other traditions, unhampered by the original historic and social contexts and subsequent decades of awe-struck veneration, can just relax and sing their hearts out. Producer Dr. Dread has picked material from Dylan's Woody Guthrie-influenced early career ("Lonesome Death of Hattie Carrol"), his anarchistic yet tender middle period ("Just Like A Woman"), and even his brief foray into born-again Christianity ("Gotta Serve Somebody"). Each selection is rhythmically revamped while the lyrics are sometimes reinterpreted via the Word according to Jah. But if the straightforward arrangements tend to mitigate Dylan's sly sophistication, his melodies, which so often took a back-seat to his poems, emerge in all their glory. Other than a rare, Dylan-sanctioned remix of a tune he recorded with Sly & Robbie, there are few earth-shaking revelations, but this engaging album is well worth owning. --Christina Roden

The Bootleg Series, Vol. 4: Bob Dylan Live, 1966: The "Royal Albert Hall Concert"

The Bootleg Series, Vol. 4: Bob Dylan Live, 1966: The "Royal Albert Hall Concert" Review

(2-LP set) This May 17th, 1966 concert, in which Dylan played electric material in front of a British audience, was actually recorded in Manchester. Even those who've owned this recording for many a year should be tempted by this official package, as it has been expanded to include the 8 electric rock songs from the original bootleg, but also the 7 solo acoustic performances that comprised the first half of the show. There's also a 56-page booklet with a fine essay by Dylan's friend Tony Glover (a notable folk musician in his own right). This is not just an interesting adjunct to Dylan's '60s discography; it's as worthy of attention as anything else he recorded during that decade.

By putting you in the audience for Dylan's Newport performances from 1963 through that pivotal set in 1965, Academy Award®-winning director Murray Lerner's The Other Side Of The Mirror captures Dylan's metamorphosis from the folk family's best-kept secret to rock's fiercely confrontational poet who would electrify an entire nation and become the voice of his generation.
